The best part of events? Creating lasting memories…

As events professionals, if you took a moment to reflect on why you do what you do, what would the answer be? Some may think that it’s about the money, travel, opportunities for meeting new people but, for me and what I think most would agree with, the overriding reason we do what we do is to create memories that last for those attending each event we help to deliver. Nothing beats the look on an individual’s face when they walk into an event space for the first time and see the vision having come to life - for us, it’s all about creating the ‘WOW’ moment that they will never forget. 

I particularly love standing back and taking a look at the room once the event has started and it’s filled with people, seeing their faces and overhearing their conversations and hearing the applause after each speech, the handshakes and hugs when they greet each other and invited guests genuinely enjoying themselves. 

One event that I’ve had the honour of working on that really stands out for this is Our Health Heroes. Each year, these awards “champion the people who keep our healthcare services functioning every day, often behind the scenes. Spanning roles such as portering, facilities, administration, estates and security, this workforce forms a significant proportion of the NHS and wider health system. Their work is essential, yet too often goes unrecognised. Our Health Heroes exists to change that, celebrating the skill, commitment and quiet resilience of those who ensure patients receive safe, effective care at every step of their journey.” - Skills for Health 

Held at the stunning QE11 Conference Centre, London, the guests are wowed before they even enter the building, the famous Westminster backdrop is the perfect setting for this heartwarming event. So, what does pulling off an awards event of such importance each year involve? For me, it means donning my rather lovely Lemonzestevents cap, in which I support the Our Health Heroes team with all elements from planning to delivery, immersing myself in speaker and staff briefings, supplier management and all other logistics. This takes a lot of organisation, as each of the finalists has a moment in the spotlight, with each nomination being read out in full to the entire room so the reasons behind each award can be truly appreciated.

With truly heartfelt stories of outstanding commitment, dedication, selflessness and a fundamental passion for keeping the NHS running, there is often not a dry eye in the room as these often unsung heroes are applauded and appreciated by their peers. This ceremony is a highlight and treat for those who deserve it the most - and making it memorable is our job. Seeing the faces of the finalists in these moments, and each person being appreciated on stage - that’s a true summary of why I love what I do.
